Following vivo’s pioneering integration of a 200-megapixel large sensor periscope telephoto lens, other major brands are beginning to adopt similar strategies.
Xiaomi recently implemented this feature in its flagship Xiaomi 15 Ultra. Now, according to a report by the well-known tech insider “Digital Chat Station” on April 29, another manufacturer appears to be preparing a similar move for its upcoming device, expected in the second half of the year. While the post did not mention a specific brand, industry speculation points toward OPPO’s next flagship, likely the Find X9 Pro.
According to the leak, the device under early engineering testing—powered by the Dimensity 9500 platform—will transition from the current OPPO Find X9 Pro camera layout featuring dual periscope lenses to a more streamlined triple-camera system with a single 200-megapixel periscope lens. This design change signals a new direction for OPPO, possibly emphasizing computational photography and sensor versatility over hardware redundancy.
Currently, OPPO and vivo approach telephoto photography differently. Vivo uses a single, high-resolution periscope telephoto lens for both standard and super-telephoto shots. It relies on cropping and algorithmic enhancement to achieve high-quality zoom results. In contrast, OPPO’s previous flagship, the Find X8 Pro, utilized a dual-lens periscope system—one for 3x and another for 6x optical zoom—offering optical versatility through dedicated hardware.
The Find X8 Pro’s quad-camera Hasselblad setup with dual periscopes made it a standout in the premium smartphone segment. If the rumored change in the Find X9 Pro is accurate, it could represent a strategic move toward simplification and enhanced sensor capability, in line with industry trends.
