Apple may be preparing a major design update for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models. According to a new report from the Chinese supply chain, the company has begun testing an under-display Face ID system, reducing the need for the current Dynamic Island cutout.
The information comes from Weibo tipster @Wisdom Pikachu, who claims that component materials for the feature are already in early-stage testing. The module reportedly uses a micro-transparent glass structure to allow Face ID sensors to function beneath the display.
While the Face ID system may move under the screen, the leak suggests the front-facing camera hole will stay, as Apple has not yet solved image quality limitations with fully hidden under-display cameras.
This means the Dynamic Island will not disappear but may become significantly smaller, offering a higher screen-to-body ratio and a less intrusive viewing experience.
Reports indicate that Apple has been developing this type of biometric technology for several years. The original internal roadmap reportedly targeted the iPhone 16 Pro lineup, but production testing did not meet required standards, leading to delays.
With the latest internal testing, the feature may now be introduced with the iPhone 18 Pro models, expected in late 2025.

Although Apple has not confirmed any specifications, early reports suggest the iPhone 18 Pro may feature:
- 2nm Apple A20 chipset
- Up to 12GB RAM
- Triple-camera system with enhanced optical technology
- Smaller Dynamic Island cutout
- Single-piece rear housing design
These details remain unverified and may change during development.

According to current information, the under-display Face ID feature may be exclusive to the Pro models at launch. The standard iPhone 18 is expected to retain the existing Dynamic Island design.
If true, this would continue Apple’s strategy of keeping major hardware upgrades reserved for the Pro lineup.

If the reports are accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro could deliver the most significant redesign to the iPhone display since the introduction of Face ID in 2017. The shift to an under-display biometric system would mark a step toward a full-screen, notch-free user experience.
More details are expected as production testing progresses throughout 2024 and early 2025.
